“Happy” Habits

Implementing a few “happy” habits throughout your day, can drastically improve your mood and, ultimately, your well being. These “happy” habits are another effective form of self-care. As Allison from Goodnet explains, “Whether it means spending time with friends, getting enough exercise, or listening to inspiring music, these simple habits can help lift your spirits and boost your mood” (Dienstman, 2019). Just taking a few minutes out of the day to indulge in a habit can allow your body and/or your mind to reset in order to take on the rest of your day.

Here are some “happy” habits that you may enjoy:

-Exercise

Whether it is a quick walk down the street or an hour-long workout routine, integrate ways to get your body moving throughout the day.

-Listen to your favorite song

Pick a song that makes you want to sing and dance around the house. Sometimes everyone needs a quick break and a great song to listen to.

-Spend time with friends and family

Whether it is family, friends, or both, find people who naturally bring you to the present moment. Living presently is an important part of life. This hectic world often has us living five steps into the future. It is important to be mindful of how you are living each day.

-Do something for someone else

Oftentimes, we feel a surge of happiness through others' gratitude. Make time to do something that will make someone’s day and watch how good it will make you feel!

-Gratitude journal

Showing gratitude each day, allows you to start off on the right foot. Being aware of all the amazing aspects of your life can boost your mood and create a positive day for yourself.

-Prioritize sleep

Getting enough sleep each night is not only good for your health but drastically increases your mood. Having enough sleep also provides you with enough energy to implement these “happy” habits and have an amazing day!

-Read a book

Finding a book that feeds your brain is crucial. In our world today, we are so attached to our phones that we often forget all the benefits that come with reading. Even if you do not like to read books, find a magazine or audio book that allows you to stimulate your mind.
